BIS Hallmark Policy

Last Updated: October 21, 2026

At Jewelchic, purity and authenticity are non-negotiable. This page explains what BIS hallmarking is, how it applies to the jewellery we sell, and how you can verify it for yourself.

1. What Is BIS Hallmarking?

BIS Hallmarking is the official gold and silver purity certification system administered by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India. A hallmark is a set of marks stamped or laser-engraved onto a piece of jewellery that certifies its precious metal purity has been independently tested and verified at a BIS-recognised Assaying & Hallmarking (A&H) Centre.

Under the Government of India's mandatory hallmarking regulations, gold jewellery and artefacts sold in India must carry a valid BIS hallmark with a unique HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number.

2. Jewelchic's Commitment

  • All eligible gold jewellery sold by Jewelchic, whether online at www.jewelchic.in or at our Ahmedabad boutique, is BIS hallmarked and carries a unique 6-digit alphanumeric HUID number.
  • Every hallmarked piece is tested for purity at a BIS-recognised Assaying & Hallmarking Centre before it reaches you.
  • Where a product includes diamonds or other gemstones, applicable grading/certification (such as IGI, GIA, or an equivalent recognised laboratory report) is provided along with the product, wherever indicated on the product page.
  • 9kt, 14kt, 18kt, and 22kt gold jewellery available on our Platform is offered strictly in the purities disclosed on each product listing, consistent with BIS purity grades (such as 375, 585, 750, and 916 for 9kt, 14kt, 18kt, and 22kt respectively).

3. Understanding the Hallmark Components

A standard BIS hallmark on gold jewellery typically includes:

  • BIS Standard Mark (the BIS logo) — confirms the piece conforms to BIS standards
  • Purity/Fineness Grade — e.g., 916 for 22kt, 750 for 18kt, 585 for 14kt, 375 for 9kt gold
  • HUID Number — a unique 6-digit alphanumeric code assigned to each individual piece, traceable to the specific Assaying & Hallmarking Centre and jeweller

4. How to Verify Your Hallmark

You can independently verify the authenticity of the hallmark on your Jewelchic purchase using the HUID number printed on your invoice/certificate:

  1. Download the official BIS Care app (available on Google Play and the Apple App Store) or visit the BIS CARE portal.
  2. Navigate to the "Verify HUID" section.
  3. Enter the 6-digit HUID number found on your product tag, invoice, or certificate.
  4. The app will display the registered purity, jeweller details, and Assaying & Hallmarking Centre associated with that HUID.

Purity can also be verified at a BIS-recognised Assaying & Hallmarking Centre; see www.bis.gov.in.

5. Items Not Covered by Hallmarking

Please note that certain categories may not carry a BIS hallmark, in line with applicable regulations and industry practice, including:

  • Jewellery below 2 grams in gold weight (where exempted under applicable rules)
  • Kundan, polki, and jadau jewellery, and pieces with intricate stone-studded work where the design does not permit hallmarking without damaging the piece
  • Lab-grown or studded jewellery where the precious metal content is below the applicable threshold
  • Watches, findings, and certain antique or repair-only items

Where a product is not BIS hallmarked for any of the above reasons, this will be clearly indicated on the product page and/or invoice.

6. Lab-Grown Diamonds & Gemstones

Lab-grown diamonds and jewellery sold by Jewelchic are accompanied by relevant certification confirming their grown origin and quality parameters, wherever applicable, and are clearly distinguished from natural diamond jewellery on the product page and invoice.

7. Old Gold Exchange & Purity Testing

Where Jewelchic offers an old gold exchange facility, the purity of exchanged gold is assessed using standard testing methods (such as karat meter/XRF testing) in your presence at our boutique, and the applicable exchange value is communicated to you transparently before the transaction is finalised. For Jewelchic jewellery, lifetime exchange and buyback values are set out in our Exchange Policy, and you receive a written component-wise valuation before settlement.

8. Your Rights

If you have any concern regarding the purity or hallmark validity of a product purchased from Jewelchic, you may raise it with our customer care team, and we will facilitate re-verification of the piece. In the rare event a genuine discrepancy in disclosed purity is established, Jewelchic will provide a replacement, correction, or refund as applicable, in line with our Return Policy and Refund Policy. Statutory remedies for defective, incorrect or misdescribed goods remain unaffected.
